    Underground Railroad

Neither a railroad nor underground, this was an informal system to help escaped slaves gain their freedom. It operated during the mid 1800's in the United States and helped escaped slaves get to either the northern states where slavery was illegal or to Canada. Many thousands of slaves escaped to freedom using the "Underground Railroad".
