Subject PathfinderPlants and Animals of New Hampshire and New England "Forests cover about 85 percent of New Hampshire. Valuable trees include ashes, basswoods, beeches, birches, cedars, elms, firs, hemlocks, maples, oaks, pines, spruces, and tamaracks. Shrubs and flowering plants thrive in the state's forests. Shrubs include American elders, blueberries, mountain laurel, and sumacs. Wildflowers, which grow throughout New Hampshire, include black-eyed Susans, daisies, fireweed, gentians, goldenrod, purple trillium, violets, and wild asters. Deer, rabbits, foxes, mink, beavers, raccoons, squirrels, and chipmunks are common throughout New Hampshire. Black bears and moose live in the northern forests. Game birds include ruffed grouse, pheasants, woodcocks, ducks, and geese. Among the many birds that nest in the state are robins, bluebirds, purple finches, sparrows, and warblers. New Hampshire's freshwater fish include brook, brown, lake, and rainbow trout; largemouth and small-mouth bass; and landlocked salmon, pickerel, perch, whitefish, and bullheads. Saltwater fish found in New Hampshire include bluefish, cod, cunner, cusk, flounder, haddock, hake, mackerel, pollock, striped bass, and tuna. The state's coastal waters have clams, lobster, oysters, and shrimp."
