Academic Chemistry

  • The Academic Chemistry course is designed to be an very rigorous course which will prepare the student for college.  As such the responsibility for learning is placed on the student using a pedagogy called the "Flipped Classroom"  Homework is now reading the text book and watching assigned videos while class time is utilized in group work, labs, activities, presentations etc.  This method allows me to work more intensively with students on a one to one basis, and allows for peer teaching which has been shown to be very effective.

As Marvin Minsky said " In the early stages of acquiring any really new skill, a person must adopt at least a partly antipleasure attitude: 'Good, this is a chance to experience awkwardness and to discover new kinds of mistakes."  This quote is very appropriate for this class.  I hope to greatly challenge your child.  Throughout the class  they will be asked to justify answers with valid reasoning and to think.  The end results will be well worth the effort required.
