Mrs. Thayer’s Class
As I reflect on this trimester, I am proud of all the hard work that has been done in 3rd and 4th grade.
In literacy we have worked on 15 common core standards in both 3rd and 4th grade. We explored our different learning styles and included a variety of reading like reader’s theater, fiction, and non-fiction tests. We have written 3 papers including an informational piece on carnivorous plants, an argumentative piece on the 2 versions of Stone Soup we read, and a narrative piece on “Things we are thankful for”. We have also done several activities with our read alouds Because of Winn Dixie and The Hoboken Chicken Emergency.
In science we learned about plants. We researched carnivorous plants and wrote an essay. We also did several experiments. We used things like carnations, carrots, celery, lima bean seeds etc. We learned about the inside of a seed and were able to see the parts.
In social studies we are learning about communities. We are researching urban, rural, and suburban areas. We are working on a project to share what we learned.
In Math 3rd graders learned 13 common core standards! We introduced multiplication and division. Students were so afraid that they couldn’t do division…and now they are on their way to being fact masters. 4th graders learned 8 common core standards including double digit multiplication. It is amazing how much hard work went on in math. In both grades we spend a lot of time sharing strategies. Kids often have great “tips” for one another. We are also working on being able to explain our thinking in written form.
I am proud of how hard our class worked this trimester!
